Welcome to the homepage of the Quantum Optics & Quantum Information Processing (QOQI) Group at Indian Institute of Science.
Quantum mechanics has provided the fundamental framework for understanding nature at its deepest level. Beyond revealing the intricate workings of the universe, it is now driving a new generation of transformative technologies and innovations. We are at the midst of transition from observing quantum rules to building quantum technologies.
Our group's theoretical foundations were laid at The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai in the year 2015. At IMSc, the group worked on quantum information theory, quantum walks, and quantum simulation. In 2020, an experimental photonics programme was built up from scratch at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), extending the group's reach from theory into hands-on quantum optics. From the transition phase between 2020-2025, the group completely relocated to the IISc in 2025.
Our position in the research landscape: Our group explores the interface between quantum information theory and photonic quantum technologies.
- We translate between foundation questions, abstract quantum protocols and physical photonic implementations.
- We develop and simulate quantum algorithms, many built on quantum walks to model the dynamics of real physical systems.
- We build experimental platforms using single and entangled photons with qubits encoded in different degress of freedom to realise quantum protocols and develop quantum computing, quantum communication and sensing devices.
Broader research topics our group contributes to:
- Photonic Quantum Computing
- Quantum Walks & Quantum Algorithms
- Quantum Communicaiton and Cryptography
- Quantum Sensing & Metrology
- Simulation of Open Quantum Systems
We are unable to respond to part-time, short-term (less than one year) and/or remote student mentorship requests. For open positions, see the opportunities tab.
